The Director of Television Licensing is responsible for leading and managing the licensing of television content across Spain and Portugal. This role involves developing and implementing strategic plans to maximize the revenue potential from a diverse portfolio of movies and television properties, including scripted, unscripted, and animated series.
The Director will work closely with a multifunctional team as well as legal departments to negotiate and secure licensing deals and partnerships that align with the organization's goals.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Planning and Execution:
- Free TV: managing client relationships and negotiating individual & volume deals with all Free to air broadcasters (TVE, MEDIASET, ATRESMEDIA, FORTA, DTT channels) both in Spain & Portugal, from First Runs to Library Features;
- Basic TV: managing all sales to basic TV clients with special focus on New TV Series & library Features;
- Formats: managing client relationships with local production companies and broadcasters to pitch and exploit new and catalogue SONY scripted and entertainment formats.
2. Develop comprehensive licensing strategies for television content in alignment with organizational objectives:
- Analyse market trends and audience preferences to identify new licensing opportunities;
- Implement actionable plans to expand licensing reach in the existing markets.
3. Negotiation and Deal Management:
- Lead negotiations on major licensing contracts and partnerships mainly with Free TV and Basic TV;
- Collaborate with legal teams to draft and review contract terms to ensure they meet company standards and business goals;
- Maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, broadcasters, and distribution partners.
4. Financial Management:
- Establish financial targets and budgets for television licensing efforts;
- Monitor financial performance of licensing deals to ensure profitability and optimize revenue streams;
- Report on financial metrics and projections to senior management.
5. Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with content production teams to understand the product pipeline and licensing potential;
- Partner with marketing and publicity departments to enhance the visibility and marketability of properties;
- Communicate effectively with internal and external partners to facilitate successful partnerships.
6. Market Research and Analysis:
- Conduct thorough research on global and regional market trends to stay ahead of industry shifts;
- Evaluate competitors' strategies and performance in television licensing;
- Utilize data analytics to assess the performance of licensed content and make informed decisions for future licensing opportunities.
7. Leadership and people growth:
- Provide training and development opportunities for team members to enhance their skills and capabilities;
- Set clear objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs) for the team, tracking progress and providing feedback.
8. Compliance and Intellectual Property:
- Ensure compliance with international copyright laws and broadcasting regulations;
- Safeguard the intellectual property rights of the organization’s television content;
- Address and resolve any legal or compliance issues related to licensing deals.
9. Innovation and Growth:
- Identify and explore new platforms and technologies for content distribution, including streaming services and digital platforms;
- Foster innovation by exploring novel licensing models and partnerships;
- Drive the development of new business initiatives to increase market presence and revenue.
Qualifications:
- Ideally, a Master’s degree in Business, Media Management, Marketing, or a related field.
- English language proficiency, written and verbal.
- Typically, 8 years of experience in television licensing, content distribution, or a related field.
- Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
- Extensive knowledge of global television markets and media rights.
- Proven track record of driving revenue growth through strategic licensing deals.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
